The Five Largest 6 Point Whitetails Ever Recorded

Thank you for reading The Whitetail Shooters Big Buck Blog. The intent of this article is to answer the question, “How big are the largest 6 point whitetails ever recorded?”

There are many great 6 point whitetails that have been recorded. but only a few will make this list of the largest 6 point whitetails ever recorded. As impressive as a 130 inch 3×3 is, in all honesty it would pale in comparison to the top five 6 points recorded. These are truly special whitetails. More rare than a 200 inch typical and fewer in number that a 300 inch non typical, these bucks should hold a special place in whitetail history.

Once again, we first need to establish the criteria. While doing research for the largest 6 point whitetails ever recorded, the gross and net scores supplied for these 6 point whitetails were all given in Boone & Crockett (B&C) inches. All measurements should be considered official, unless otherwise noted. There isn’t a single 6 point whitetail recorded that qualifies for the B&C record book, but all of these deer have been measured by qualified individuals who have proven their accuracy through many years of certified scoring at both the State, Regional, and National levels. However, some of the following 6 pointers were not measured by officially certified B&C members. But the numbers are considered accurate and “official” by State and Regional programs, and/or record books. I have included a section for gross and net scores. When measurements are listed as net scores, the final number reached after symmetrical and abnormal point deductions, this number will be the score listed within any record book.

Also, it seems there are always rumors and stories of bigger bucks and I’m sure it’s going to be the same scenario with 6 pointers. I just want to say this, unless the deer in rumor has been officially measured, either at the State or National level, AND has photographic proof; it’s not going to make this list. Rumors don’t make facts, and within this article we are dealing with solid facts. If you have or know of a buck that will make the list of largest 6 point whitetails ever recorded, by all means please contact me and I’ll gladly update this article with the new information.

Now, let’s begin our countdown of the largest 6 point whitetails ever recorded, so we can crown the undisputed world record 6 point whitetail.

Counting Down the Largest 6 Point Whitetails Ever recorded

Number five on our list of the largest 6 point whitetails ever recorded comes from Massachusetts. Known as “The Scheffler Buck”, this Sheffler 6 point was hit by a car in Orleans (Cape Cod) Massachusetts in the 80’s, and is the largest 6 point whitetail to come from the eastern part of whitetail range. Klaus Lebrecht considers The Scheffler Buck as being the most impressive of all the top end world class 6 point whitetails. This great buck has a gross typical frame that measures 157 7/8 inches and a final net score of 150 3/8 inches. A single non typical point deduction prevents the buck from ranking in the top three. The main beams on this rare beauty are 29 2/8 and 28 inches respectively. The rich, “golden rust” color is indicative of the part of the country it originates and certainly appeals to all antler aficionados. Replicas of this giant 6 point are available through Antlers by Klaus, click here for details.

Number four on our list of the largest 6 point whitetails ever recorded comes from Ohio. Taken by Rick Scholz during the 2002 Ohio crossbow season while hunting in Delaware County. I have just received this information so I have yet to have all the information and particulars about the hunt and scoring numbers. However, its safe to say, that at 150 4/8 net inches, the Rick Scholz 6 point certainly belongs on this list. Thanks to Mike Rex for the new information.

Number three on our list of the largest 6 point whitetails ever recorded comes from the great whitetail state of Ohio. Taken in the mid 1990’s by then 14 year old Luke Patterson who was hunting near Lakeville, OH. This great buck was officially scored by Buckeye Big Bucks at 155 gross typical inches and 152 2/8 net inches, making it one of the greatest sets of 6 point whitetail antlers ever recorded. Replicas of this giant 6 point are available through Heath Cline at Black Creek Taxidermy, click here for details.

We’re going to Illinois for the number two buck on our list of the largest 6 point whitetails ever recorded. Eric Jennings took this amazing whitetail during the State’s 1990 firearm season while hunting in Johnsonn County, Illinois. For many years this buck carried the title for being the world record 6 point whitetail. Unfortunately, all that remains of this spectacular buck are a couple photos. Tragedy stuck in January 1991 when Jerry Staffords taxidermy studio burned to the ground. The antlers from the Eric Jennings 6 point were among the more than 225 mounts that were lost in the fire. This buck is absolutely amazing, being the only 6 point whitetail in the world that is known to gross over 160 inches typical. The antlers push the gross score to an astonishing 163 typical inches! The final net score is 153 6/8, making it the second largest 6 point whitetail ever recorded.

The number one buck on our list of the largest 6 point whitetails ever recorded, and reigning world record six point goes to a buck from Wisconsin. The buck was taken during the 2005 archery season by Burt Eichstaedt. Any time you talk about world record whitetails the buck will always be something special, and the Eichstaedt buck is no exception. Pushing this buck into the number one position are world class beam lengths of 28 4/8 and 29 inches. Add a 21 6/8 inch inside spread and super brow points, and you have a buck that’s going to sit well in any collection of giant whitetails! A rightfully earned honor considering this is the world record 6 point whitetail deer. Replicas of the Burt Eischstaedt 6 point buck are available through Antlers by Klaus, click here for details.

In an attempt to share a visual comparison of the true size of the Eichstaedt buck, I’ve shown it here (on the left) alongside a 4×4 and a 5×5 of the same gross score. All three bucks gross measure within an inch of each other. The mounts are closely scaled to size but are not exact. Also, if we added G3’s to the antlers, the buck would measure within the top twelve 4×4’s ever recorded. I hope this visual comparison pus this buck into a proper perspective for you?

Honorable Mention: The Largest 6 Point Whitetails Ever Recorded

This list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning what some people consider as being the largest 6 point whitetail ever recorded. The buck was killed in Kansas by Brian King in 2002, it has an official gross score of 166 inches and nets 163. Very impressive numbers! However, as you can see by the photo, the buck is actually an 8 point with broken brow points. This fact is of significant importance because it causes the antlers to be measured as an 8 point and not a true 6 point. This moves two circumference measurements farther up the beam, thus making them substantially bigger than the circumference measurements of a true 3 point antler. In my opinion, this fact disqualifies the Brian King buck as being the largest 6 point whitetail ever recorded. It’s a stupendous buck, one that has numbers and score of which are undoubtedly world class, but it’s simply not a true 3×3 whitetail.

Our list of largest 6 point whitetails ever recorded wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the current Canadian record 6 point whitetail. Taken a few years ago in Saskatchewan, this great buck should be any hunters dream. With a gross score of 150 inches, the great buck nets a very impressive 148 4/8 inches. The hunter’s name, location of the hunt, and measuring information were not available at the time of this writing.

Largest 8 Point Whitetails Ever Recorded

Six of the Largest 8 Point Whitetails Ever Recorded

Thank you for reading The Whitetail Shooters Big Buck Blog. The intent of this article is to answer the question, “What are the largest 8 point whitetails ever recorded?”

First and foremost we need to establish the criteria. The information and scoring numbers used for this search are from the Boone & Crockett record book, or in the least, from using the B&C measuring system. All measurements listed are official B&C net scores, in other words, the final number reached after symmetrical and abnormal point deductions, as this number will be the score listed within the record book.

There are many giant 8 point whitetails recorded that do not make the list, this is the elite of the elite. There are always rumors of larger “known” bucks, but until they are given an official score from a certified measurer it is all hearsay. This list is complete with the top five 8 point whitetails that have been officially scored and certified. If there is a bigger 8 point whitetail out there then it has not been officially measured and certified as of this article.

With that being said, here they are in descending order, the top five 8 point whitetails ever recorded including a sixth whitetail that could very possibly be the new world record 8 point.

The Largest 8 Point Whitetails Ever Recorded: Tied at #’s 4 & 5

Starting our list are two great bucks that are tied in score, and both were once recognized by B&C as being the world record 8 point whitetail. The Vernon Winter buck was taken in 1965 in Hand County, South Dakota. It has a final net score of 180 3/8. Sharing the score and status of former world record 8 point whitetail is a buck taken in 2001 in Michigan’s Hillsdale County by Victor Bulliner. Known as “The Lucky Buck”, the giant 8 point grosses 184 1/8 and has a final net score of 180 3/8.

Coming in at number three on our countdown to the world record 8 point whitetail is a beautiful buck taken in Saskatchewan by Allen Colly during the 1993 season. The beautiful 8 point whitetail is considered Canada’s record 4×4 with a final net score of 180 5/8 inches. Information on the location the buck was taken, as well as it’s gross score and measurements were not available at the time of this writing.

The Largest 8 Point Whitetails Ever Recorded: #2

The second largest 8 point whitetail ever recorded comes from the State of Iowa. Taken in 1996 by Elisha Hugen, this great 8 point is unofficially the largest 8 point whitetail ever taken by a female hunter. The great buck has a gross typical score of 188 2/8 and an official net score of 182 3/8 inches. Other world class numbers include an inside spread of 23 4/8 inches, it’s right side G2 is 14 7/8 inches tall and the left side G2 stretches to 15 0/8 inches! Unfortunately, quality photographs of the Hugen buck are virtually non existent.

The current recognized world record 8 point whitetail comes from the State of Illinois. This great buck was taken in the central part of the State during the 2011 firearms season by Jason Sanders. The antlers on the Sanders buck are built on a pure 4×4 typical frame with a short abnormal point. Check out these numbers; total gross typical is an astounding 192 3/8 inches! The beams are 30 and 32 inches! The G2’s measure 14 and 16 inches, while the G3’s are both 12+ inches each! A respectable inside spread of 22 3/8  inches compliments these world record 8 point antlers. The final official score after deducting symmetry differences and the 1 6/8 inch abnormal point is 183 1/8 inches!

Honorable Mention

No conversation about the largest 8 point whitetails ever recorded would be complete without mentioning this great southern deer. Lonnie Copeland took this tremendous buck in Prairie County, Arkansas during the 1992 firearms season. Recently re-scored at 185 7/8 net inches, the Copeland rack has 30-inch main beams and 17-inch G-2s, had not two tine’s (the G4 and G5 on the right main beam) been broken off, we could very possibly be talking about an overall world record typical whitetail. Some people consider the Copeland buck as being the largest 8 point ever recorded, however, a simple explanation could change some opinions.

Although it’s true the Copeland buck is entered as having a 4×4 score sheet, the problem lies within the placement of the mass measurements. A true four point antler receives its fourth circumference half way between the beam tip and the center of the G3. This is quite different from a five point antler receiving its fourth circumference between the G3 and G4, which in almost all cases is going to be upwards of an inch or more BIGGER than the fourth circumference of a true four point. The circumference measurements on the Copeland buck were taken on both beams in the location between the G3 & G4. This placement has increased the overall score by at least two full inches and should, for all practical purposes, not allow the buck to be considered as a true 4×4. It’s still a world class whitetail, but in this writer’s opinion it does not fit the criteria as being a pure 4×4 so it should not have the status as being the world record 8 point whitetail.

Could This Be The New World Record 8 Point?

***NEW INFORMATION HAS SURFACED WHICH REQUIRED AN UPDATE TO THE FOLLOWING DEER***

Although this giant buck has yet to be entered, or for that matter, Recently officially measured, the Minnesota DNR is reporting the buck to score 190 inches gross and 185 net inches. These numbers, when officially entered, will place the deer at the top of the list for a world record 8 point whitetail. The buck was poached in the southeastern part of the state in 2009. The MNDNR may never enter the deer thus the deer may never receive the true world record recognition it deserves. However, it’s obvious the deer should be recognized as being the largest 8 point whitetail ever recorded.

I’d like to hear your opinion on what you think about these giant 8 point whitetails. What are your thoughts on the Copeland buck being considered the world record 8 point whitetail? Should the Minnesota buck, being it was poached, be given recognition as being the largest 8 point whitetail ever recorded? Please post your comments and opinions at the bottom of this page in the comments section.
